ΑΝΑΠΤΥΞΗ ΕΛΕΥΘΕΡΟΥ ΔΟΜΗΜΕΝΟΥ ΜΟΥΣΙΚΟΥ ΑΥΤΟΣΧΕΔΙΑΣΜΟΥ (ΤΑΞΙΜΙ)
• Με ποιους τρόπους μπορούμε να αναπτύξουμε ένα δομημένο ταξίμι?
• Πως εκμεταλέυομαι την μελέτη και την ανάλυση του ρεπερτορίου προς αυτήν την κατεύθυνση?
• Πως συσχετίζεται ο προφορικός λόγος με το ταξίμι, και με ποιον τρόπο αυτή ακριβώς η συσχέτιση καθώς και η κατανόηση κάποιων βασικών στοιχείων ενός τροπικού μουσικού συστήματος όπως τα Μακάμ μας προσφέρουν εργαλεία στην ανάπτυξη ενός δομημένου αυτοσχεδιασμού?
Το σεμινάριο αυτό θα επικεντρωθεί στην διερεύνηση τρόπων ανάπτυξης ενός δομημένου ελεύθερου μουσικού αυτοσχεδιασμού, εξετάζοντας τα ερωτήματα που προαναφέρθηκαν, μέσα από την βασική θεωρία του τροπικού μουσικού συστήματος των Μακάμ.
Κύρια εργαλεία προς αυτήν της κατεύθυνση θα είναι η μελέτη και η τροπική ανάλυση χαρακτηριστικού ρεπερτορίου της Ελλάδας, και η σύνδεση της μουσικής πράξης με την βασική θεωρία. Θα εξεταστούν ζητήματα όπως
- η συσχέτιση του προφορικού λόγου με την μουσική φρασεολογία,
- οι τρόποι ανανέωσης και εμπλουτισμού του μουσικού μας λεξιλογίου,
- ο ρόλος των δομικών χαρακτηριστικών μίας μουσικής κλίμακας (κύριες & δευτερεύουσες βαθμίδες, υπομονάδες τετράχορδων – πενταχόρδων)
- η σημασία των τελικών και ημιτελών καταλήξεων.
Το σεμινάριο απευθύνεται σε όσους επιθυμούν να μυηθούν στην τέχνη του αυτοσχεδιασμού σε ένα τροπικό μουσικό περιβάλλον. Μπορείτε να συμμετάσχετε με οποιοδήποτε μουσικό όργανο που έχει τη δυνατότητα να παίξει τροπικά διαστήματα ή απλώς με τη φωνή σας.
Καλό θα είναι να κατέχει κανείς το όργανό του σε βασικό ως μέτριο επίπεδο. Επιθυμητή αλλά όχι απαραίτητη η ανάγνωση παρτιτούρας.

ΣΧΕΤΙΚΑ ΜΕ ΤΟΝ ΔΙΔΑΣΚΟΝΤΑ
O Γιάννης Δερμιτζάκης μαθήτευσε στο ούτι με τον Γιώργο Μαυρομανωλάκη στο ωδείο Χορωδείον. Έχει παρακολουθήσει σεμινάρια στο Μουσικό Εργαστήρι Λαβύρινθος με καθηγητές τον Yurdal Tokcan, τον Χάρη Λαμπράκη, τον Ross Daly και τον Κυριάκο Ταπάκη και έχει συμμετάσχει ως μαθητής σε ορχήστρα του Λαβύρινθου.
Συνθέσεις του έχουν πλαισιώσει παρουσιάσεις βιβλίων, θεατρικά εργαστήρια και ταινίες μικρού μήκους, ενώ έχει παίξει και συμμετάσχει σε μουσικούς χώρους και φεστιβάλ εντός και εκτός Ελλάδας. Τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2021 σε συνεργασία με την σκηνοθέτη Μαρία Γαϊτανίδη παρουσίασαν το ερευνητικό τους project ¨Ερωφίλη – Παρτιτούρα – πρακτικές πειραματικές προσεγγίσεις με ένα ούτι και μία φωνή¨ στο ¨TaPRA 2021 conference¨ το οποίο φιλοξενήθηκε από το Liverpool Hope University.
Συμμετέχει τακτικά ως επισκέπτης εισηγητής στο ερευνητικό εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα „Η τέχνη του ρυθμού στην εκπαίδευση“, του εργαστηρίου Μουσικής-Θεάτρου-Κινηματογράφου του τμήματος Φιλολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Κρήτης, το οποίο τελεί υπό την καθοδήγηση του Γιάννη Παπατζανή. Έχει διδάξει „Ούτι“ και “Ρυθμολογία και Μουσικούς τρόπους παραδόσεων της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου” σε ωδεία και μουσικές σχολές στην Κρήτη. Αποτελεί από το 2022 συνεργάτη της Μεσογειακής Σχολής Δραματικής Τέχνης Triptyco, η οποία εδράζει στο Ηράκλειο της Κρήτης.

FREE MODAL IMPROVISATION (TAKSIM)
WITH GIANNIS DERMITZAKIS
How can we develop a constructed improvisation?
How can we study and analyze the repertoire in such a direction?
How is the oral speech connected to improvisation, and how can a modal music system like the makam system provide us with tools to develop a constructed improvisation?
The workshop will focus in researching the ways to develop a free constructed musical improvisation through the basic theory of the modal music system of the makams.
The main tools in that direction will be the study and modal analysis of a typical repertoire of Greek music and the connection of the musical practice with the basic theory of the Makams. We will handle themes like
- Connection of oral speech with the music phrasing, ways of renewal and enrichment of our own musical language.
- The structural characteristics of a musical scale (main and secondary notes, sub-units of tetrachords and pentachords)
- final and semi-final endings
The seminar adresses everyone who wish to get initiated into the art of improvisation (taksim) within a modal musical environment. You can join with any musical instrument that can play modal intervals, or just with your voice.
It would make sense if the participants mastered their instrument at a basic to intermediate level. Score reading is useful but not a condition.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Giannis studied oud with Giorgos Mavromanolakis at the „Chorodion academy of music“ in Heraklion, Crete. He participated in seminars on „Turkish style oud“, „Rhythmical & free improvisation“ and „The Phrasing of Makam“ at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop with Yurdal Tokcan, Harris Lambrakis, Kyriakos Tapakis and Ross Daly respectively as well as taken part as a student in an ensemble of Labyrinth Musical Workshop under Ross Daly’s direction.
He has performed at many festivals in Greece and abroad. In 2021 he worked together with Maria Gaitanoudi on the research project „Erofili Score – experimental approaches for oud and voice“ which was presented at the „TaPRA 2021 Conference“ hosted by the Liverpool Hope University and his compositions have accompanied book presentations, theatre workshops and short films.
He regularly participates as a visiting lecturer in the research educational program of the University of Crete „The art of rhythm in education“, which takes place under the guidance of Giannis Papatzanis. Since 2022, he has been a partner of the Triptyco Mediterranean School of Dramatic Art, which is based in Heraklion, Crete.

Σεμινάριο “Τραγούδια από τα νησιά του Aιγαίου ”
Σε αυτό το σεμινάριο, θα μας δοθεί η ευκαιρία να συμμετέχουμε σε ένα μουσικό οδοιπορικό, από νησί σε νησί , μαθαίνοντας γνωστά και άγνωστα παραδοσιακά τραγούδια-σκοπούς των νησιών του Αιγαίου. Θα μας δοθεί επίσης η δυνατότητα να αναλύσουμε τοπικά υφολογικά ιδιώματα, τρόπους ανάπτυξης ενός μουσικού προγράμματος, αλλά και σύνθεσης μιας αιγαιοπελαγίτικης ζυγιάς.
Το σεμινάριο απευθύνεται σε όσους ασχολούνται με το βιολί αλλά και με άλλα μουσικά όργανα καθώς και με το τραγούδι σε επίπεδο τουλάχιστον βασικό, ανεξαρτήτως μουσικής κατάρτισης, καθώς και σε σπουδαστές ή μουσικούς της κλασικής μουσικής που επιθυμούν να γνωρίσουν την πλούσια μουσική παράδοση των νησιών του Αιγαίου.

SONGS FROM THE AEGEAN ISLANDS
WITH GLAFKOS SMARIANAKIS
In this seminar we are going to take part at a musical trip through the different islands, learning more or less known traditional songs and tunes from the Aegean. We will also analyze local playing styles and musical idioms from different islands in terms of technique and ornamentation, as well as the basics for the formation of a “zygiá“, a traditional orchestra of Aegean music.
The seminar is suitable for violin players and instrumentalists of a basic level onwards, as well as singers of any musical background. Also helpful for students or musicians of classical western music, who wish to get introduced to the rich and colorful traditions of the Aegean Islands.

About the instructor:
Gláfkos Smarianákis has graduated from the Department of Traditional Music of the Athens Conservatory, class of Kyriakos Gouventas, where he also studied classical violin and music theory with professor Kostas Dimouleas.
He started music lessons (classical violin) at the age of 6 in his hometown Rhodes. While being a pupil at the Musical Highschool of Rhodes, he started participating in youth orchestras as well as professional ensembles, at the same time studying with established musicians of the dodecanesean traditions like George Chatzipetros and Giannis Koulianos.
2008 he moves to Crete, where he has the opportunity to take part in seminars of Ross Daly (modal music), George Papaioannou (Makam on Violin), Kyriakos Gouventas (traditional violin). Working as a violin player, he travels throughout Greece, systematically researching the role of the violin in the traditional and popular music. Very important was for him his cooperation with “Teatri mobili compagnia Girovago Rondella e Dromosofista ’’.
Since 2014 he has been living in Athens, where he works as a musician (violin, singing, strings, composition, arrangements). He is an active member of Banda Jovanica, Bam Trio and other ensembles of traditional and popular music in Greece.

Weekend of May 20-21 will see a seminar on Ney and Modal Music!
In the mornings the course will focus on the Ney, the end-blown reed flute key to certain musical traditions of Turkey, Iran, and the Arab world. We will concentrate on the basics and the repertory of the instrument.
In the afternoon we will switch to group playing, and we will study various modal musics from Greece, Turkey and Middle East of folk, ritual and classical pieces and songs as well as compositions of contemporary modal music. We will work on themes as interpretation, ornamentation, microtones, aspects of rhythms and odd measures etc.
In order to attend the course a good level on reading music is required.
Participants are welcome to bring any rhythmic or melodic instrument, including the voice.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Multi_instrumentalist and composer, Christos Barbas is one of the most multifaceted and creative musicians coming from Greece. From an early age he studied the recorder, piano, baroque music, harmony and counterpoint, finishing his studies of Western music in 2002. He studied musicology and ethnomusicology (Mmus) in the Department of Music at the University of Aristotelio (Thessaloniki) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (London). Since 2003 he focuses on the study of Ney, Sufi and classical Ottoman music with outstanding performers in Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. At the same time he studies and plays several instruments of different musical cultures (kaval, bansuri, irish whistles, bagpipes) ranging from traditional musics to free improvisation and jazz. Actually he is studying Fugue composition in the Athens Conservatoire with Panagiotis Adam.
His main interest is a creative approach to music. Especially the study of older musics, sacred and popular, from the point of view that underline their timelessness and possibilities for people to create, rather than the rigidity of authenticity itself. He communicates this goal through the interpretation of old music, his own compositions, and participating in various projects with other arts and teaching in seminars and workshops of music.
He composes for different formations in a variety of styles (music for contemporary dance, theatre, cinema, modal music) producing 9 cds till now of original music (Yeden, Neda, Magnanimus Trio & Murat Aydemir, Peppe Frana, Efren Lopez). Along with his own groups he collaborates with some of the most prominent performers and creators of traditional and contemporary music: Ross Daly & Labyrinth, Zohar Fresco, Efrén López & Abracadabra, L’Ham de Foc, Evgenios Voulgaris, Milo ke Mandarini Quartet, Maria Farantouri, Anja Lechner, Thomas Strønen, Björn Meyer etc participating in concerts worldwide recording extensively in the wider field of contemporary modal music with companies as An Music, Felmay IT and ECM Records.
He has taught Ney and Kaval, interpretation, improvisation and composition in Modal Music at the University of Popular Music and Traditional Arta (Greece), and also in Macedonia (Thessaloniki). He teaches in Musical Workshop Labyrinth in Crete and in other cultural centers throughout Europe and is the artistic director of Labyrinth Catalunya.
